Jarapas (which can also be used as throws and bedspreads) have been created by Andalucian artisans for centuries. The craft is an offshoot of the thriving silk and textile industries of the 10th to 15th centuries in Granada Province and has its roots in the Moorish textile traditions of Syria and Persia. The unique, brightly coloured rugs continue to be handcrafted on wooden looms that are often based in remote mountain workshops. The high quality fibres used, and the type of loom employed make the rugs both strong and soft.

Our jarapas are made by two highly respected artisans. Juan Bordalás (pictured above) specialises in the wonderfully thick ‘Provenzal’ jarapas: two rugs in one, each side showing a geometrically contrasting design. These rugs come in many beautiful colours as well as neutral shades. They are super hard-wearing and excellent value for money!

We also buy from Rafaela Hernández López. She makes jarapas in a wide range of wonderful textures, patterns and tones. We think Rafaela’s rugs are special because they combine a distinctive style with ancient tradition. Many of her jarapas have a really contemporary feel while, like Juan’s, they have all been made in the traditional way on a wooden loom of Arabic origin.
